Macharnudo Estate is one of the legendary and most famed Crus of the Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Denomination of Origin. Located 5 km northwest of the town of Jerez de la Frontera, this Cru is at the heart of the most important wine-growing area and provides exceptional climate and soil conditions.
Macharnudo Alto is considered the Grand Cru of Jerez and one of the most important vineyards worldwide. It houses renowned vineyards like Viña Valdespino at the heart of this estate; 135 metres above sea level in an area known as ‘El Santo’ (The Saint) because of the figure that presides over it. It stretches over 17 hectares of exceptional vineyards cultivated in high quality Albariza soil; a particularly calcareous soil, ideal for the local grape variety Palomino Fino. The vines in Viña Valdespino are between 50 and 60 years old. The area provides plenty of sunshine and sloped land which means that the soil absorbs less water, thus resulting in highly concentrated musts.
The importance of Macharnudo Alto is evident from the quality and excellence of our wines. Valdespino is one of the few companies which own vineyards in Macharnudo Alto and is the only winery to produce six ‘Single Vineyard’ wines made entirely from grapes grown on this emblematic and historic estate.
At Valdespino we value the terroir, the origin of everything. That is why the character of Macharnudo is at the essence of our collections.
